I was a member of the Waterloo Warriors figure skating team in 2007 and 2009 and when I heard that the Ontario Championships competition was going to be hosted by Laurier I got a bit excited.  My sister skates for the Ryerson Rams so it would give me a good opportunity to see her as well as see teammates from the past.  As it seems to happen every year the two day competition fell right in the middle of Ontario’s University Reading week which means no classes to miss and lot’s of free time.

My Parents were planning on coming to Waterloo to watch my sister skate which means that they would be coming to visit ME and I could stay in Waterloo and get some much needed homework done as the week after reading week was our so called “hell week” (5 midterms in 5 days!!)  Anyways long story short I went to watch a few events on Wednesday morning which ended up being Ladies Short program, Senior Silver Dance, Men and Dance fours.  It was good to see some old friends from the skating world and say hello to my sister as well as snap a few shots of some skating.  I had an enjoyable conversation with the Waterloo Athletics publication coordinator Steve Brooks  while standing at the boards taking a few shots.  The Warriors ended up being in First place after day 1, but eventually dropped down to third which was still a great result.  The last time Waterloo won the competition was in 1985-86.

Anyways below are a few shots I ended up getting while cheering on the Warriors.  I hope to be back on the team next year so look forward to more skating shots in the future.

The Ontario Engineering Competition was held in Waterloo this year and I was there to cover most of the action.  The Senior design competition wrapped up at 4:00am so it was a long night but floating around talking to the teams and getting a look at all of the designs as they were being built was fun.  The senior design competition involved building a device that would descend a mine shaft, extract a mineral and then bring the mineral back to the surface.  Here are some of the shots I took of the Senior Design Development process.  They get 8 hours to complete to design, build and create a presentation.  The discovery Channel’s Daily Planet crew was also making the rounds and were specifically following my friends from Queens University.  Laurentian University was the eventual winner (fitting since it is a very geological and rock oriented school) of the Senior Design Competition but Waterloo placed in almost every Category.  Top two teams Advance to the Canadian Engineering Competion being held in Toronto.
