One of my friends Callie is a food blogger and she really enjoys food photography.  This weekend she told me she was going to go on an adventure in Toronto and because she almost only photographs food, I challenged her to take some pictures of something else.  As a similar challenge, she wanted me to create a blog post about a meal I cook this weekend.  I took on the challenge and will outline the meals in which I cooked this weekend.

I will preface this post by saying i am probably the worst eater ever and should probably have scurvy.  I also have nothing insightful to share as far as recipe’s go, but I guess the simplicity of my cooking will entertain.

Saturday
I woke up on Saturday, and since my PS3 is attached to a monitor at the end of my bed, I started playing Star Wars Force Unleashed II.  The next time I looked at the clock, it was 4:30pm and I had not eaten anything.  I decided it was time to cook come food, so here is the Saturday evening meal.

I have been involved with a charity fashion show which is run on campus, for three years now.  I typically help with the photography for their major poster runs and show program and usually get access to fun locations and beautiful models.  This year the theme of the show is a Hollywood movie type theme and so the photographers had to pick a theme and try and create a movie poster out of it.

I had an idea pop into my head that I have been wanting to do for a while now but never really had the drive to do it.  I pictured an old school movie poster with a pinup type model against a tree with the shadows of a monster or thing on the ground in front of her.

On a cold winter’s night with temperatures hovering around -15C, we set out to try and bring my vision to reality.  Before getting the model dressed and cold, we played around with the speedlights we had brought to try and get the shadow to work properly.  This task was much more difficult then I had anticipated.  With the help of two trusty photoclub members Maran and Tristan, we were able to maneuver Tristan’s hands and Maran’s handheld speedlight into a position that would cast the shadow I was looking for.

We then signaled for our beautiful model Cass, to make her brief appearance against the tree for a few shots.  Being in those temperatures with that dress on is a very brave thing to do and I really appreciate the good attitude everyone had that night.

Once the outdoor scene was done, I had done some research of cool movie posters and really liked one that had a closeup of someones face with blood dripping down it.  I wanted to try this myself and so we found an empty classroom and set up one softbox to be used as our key.  Having no makeup artist, I expertly (not so much) applied the dripping blood affect and then we went to work.  Tristan had some coloured gels for his speedlight, so we had some fun playing with a red one, for extra spooky effect.

I don’t think my vision really fit with the style of the rest of the posters so I don’t think it got used for the posters advertising the show, but I had a good time doing the shoot.  The shots displayed below are not my final vision as I do not posses the photoshop wizardry to really bring the image I have in my mind to life, but I do really enjoy the images as they stand and I hope you do too.

Let me know what you think?
What’s the Strangest Photo shoot you’ve ever done?
