A few weeks ago I was asked by the organizers of the Engineering-AHS-Math Semi Formal, if I would like to take photographs at their semi formal.  I had to figure out if I was competing in the Waterloo Engineering Competition or go to Semi.  By the time I had made up my mind, the senior design competition was already full, so my procrastination had made up my mind for me.

I suggested that they ask the UW Photo club to cover the event so at least I could get a few helpers, and wasn’t stuck shooting the event all by myself.  I had a few volunteers sign up, but one got sick and the other couldn’t stay for very long.  Therefore I ended up shooting the event myself anyways. It was a Red Carpet themed event, so we set up a photobooth on the red carpet.

I asked the organizers to set up some sort of a background and so they set up a wall which mimicked the advertising seen on backgrounds of actual red carpet events.  I had two softboxes on either side in a very easy set up.  I ended up bouncing a bare flash off the ceiling in order to fill in the background and eliminate some of the shadows.

From a photography standpoint the photos are nothing special, but the nature of the event made it very difficult to make sure the lighting was perfect on every shot.  People never stood in the middle and it was very difficult to manage groups sometimes.  When the three faculties mascots showed up things got even more hectic, but a representative from each faculty helped organize things and things ran pretty slowly.   It was good practice working with people when there is a lot going on and things aren’t straightforward. I had a lot of fun and I think everyone else did too.   I think the event was a success, check out the photos below for a quick taste.

I was on campus doing a video project in the morning and had just met up with my lab partner to work on a lab in the afternoon when we walked past a berry bush, which had a bunch of Blue Jays flying around it.  At first thought I figured that by the time I got my camera out of my bag and threw on the 70-200mm,  that they would be gone but decided to give it a try due to the proximity of the birds and my ability to reach them with my 7-200mm.  To my surprise I got my camera out of my bag and ready to go and the Blue Jays were still around.  I spent the next 5-10 minutes walking around the bush trying to get as many good shots as I could.  I ended up taking about 40 images and was left with these 6 keepers.  I don’t do wildlife very often due to the patience and time it requires but when the animals make it that easy, I am very easy to give it a try.  I didn’t want to leave my lab partner waiting too long or I probably would have spent a lot more time with that bush.
