One of my friends Callie is a food blogger and she really enjoys food photography.  This weekend she told me she was going to go on an adventure in Toronto and because she almost only photographs food, I challenged her to take some pictures of something else.  As a similar challenge, she wanted me to create a blog post about a meal I cook this weekend.  I took on the challenge and will outline the meals in which I cooked this weekend.

I will preface this post by saying i am probably the worst eater ever and should probably have scurvy.  I also have nothing insightful to share as far as recipe’s go, but I guess the simplicity of my cooking will entertain.

Saturday
I woke up on Saturday, and since my PS3 is attached to a monitor at the end of my bed, I started playing Star Wars Force Unleashed II.  The next time I looked at the clock, it was 4:30pm and I had not eaten anything.  I decided it was time to cook come food, so here is the Saturday evening meal.

I had the end of some bags of food in the freezer and thought it would be a good idea to finish them off.  Chicken fingers and perogies are staples in my diet and so it is fitting that they make the big blog post.

The toaster oven is the perfect size for chicken finger cooking and since these ones are pre-cooked it only takes about 8 minutes from start to finish.

For a long time I was never a fan of the perogies that I would cook myself, and the ones in my cafeteria in high school were always so delicious.  I had always fried them from frozen and they would always get too crunchy, where I like them soft.  One day I came to the realization that the only way to make the perogies taste awesome while staying nice and soft was to boil them first and then fry them.

Cooking them for a little bit in butter and oil (Healthy I know) makes them taste delicious and keeps their soft texture.

Since everyone always yells at me for not eating enough fruits and vegetables, I figured that my meal could use some fruits or veggies and therefore Swedish Berries were a delicious way to make it a well balanced meal.

Looking back it is pretty bad that it is the only meal i ate on saturday but it was so late that I didn’t end up getting hungry later on.

Sunday
Sunday I woke up at a decent time and actually got out of bed and did some chores around the house, although Angry Birds breaks took up a great deal of the chore time.  I had decided to do some errands later in the day and so I decided that I should probably eat lunch.  For whatever reason, i had a Kraft Dinner craving and so that was what i ended up having.

The whole wheat Kraft Dinner is not as good as the regular, don’t let anyone tell you differently.

Adding 100% real cheese that for sure has all of the nutritional benefits of real cheese!

It was a yummy lunch! Does the fact that I ate the whole box in one meal make me fat?

On to Dinner.  I am on Co-op this term which means that a totally different group of people are on campus meaning there is opportunity to meet new people and make awesome friends.  One group of friends who I have recently been spending time with has a potluck every Sunday which I have been invited to on a few occasions.  This Sunday was the first time i was able to attend and so I figured I would try and make a meal that my mom makes on occasion, that I know is great but I had never made myself.  I took a trip to the grocery store and re stocked the freezer with a fresh 2Kg bag of chicken fingers and another bag of perogies.  Along with that stuff, I also picked up some assorted seafood and garlic.  I was going to try and make garlic seafood pasta, which is basically seafood, garlic, butter and oil.

I decided to go with fresh cloves of garlic because I saw them first and they were only $.89 for three.  I know my mom has pre chopped garlic in a jar which is probably available at the grocery store somewhere but this seemed cheaper.

Next up was cooking the pasta, I didn’t have a big pot and so i tried to cook a little too much pasta at once, but it ended up working out and cooked with few problems.

while the pasta was still cooking I added the oil, butter and seafood into a skillet and cooked them for a while before adding the freshly cooked pasta.

tossed around the stuffs to mix it all together and Voila, delicious pasta that is extremely easy to make but seems decently impressive when you bring it to a potluck.  The best part, is that it is delicious. I seem to like the word delicious when talking about this pasta!

Apparently this weeks potluck was on the small side as it is the end of reading week and people are still returning from wherever their travels had taken them, but i still got plenty of food.

Looking back at my Saturday and Sunday meals, makes me realize that I need to do better at eating properly on the weekend.  The beer diet does not promote a healthy self and is not sustainable.  However, I have been getting better and the fun I had cooking Sundays meal may convince me to try it again sometime.  I might make Sunday, experiment with random recipes night and then use the potluck goers as test subjects.  Could be fun, although I won’t be boring you with the details on this blog in future.

I did enjoy the food photography and although I didn’t really spend much time on the setup or actual taking of the photos, I had fun documenting the event and thinking about what I would say to accompany the photo.  It’s probably not something I will do on a regular basis but it is nice to do every once in a while.

Check out Callie’s Toronto photos here : Callie’s Flickr Stream. I realized that I haven’t done a year in review for 2010 as I did for 2009 2009:Year in Review so look forward to that in the future!
